Brittany “Britt” E. Harmssen
Britt Harmssen is a former government official/public sector guru, Big Law abandoner, continuous improvement analyst, and California and Ninth Circuit employment and labor law veteran.
Through her years of experience as a litigator, government executive, and public policy advisor, Britt has achieved reputable success in representing and advising employers and government officials in complex employment matters and class actions in both the private and public sectors. An adept mediator, negotiator, and strategist, Britt served as a conflict resolution expert and on-call advisor to local and state government officials and over twenty government departments.
Britt is a California wage and hour wizard, with a frightening ability to cite specific Labor Code provisions without reference. Britt has experience in all areas of employment law, including wage and hour claims, misclassification, employment discrimination, sexual harassment, affirmative action, grievances, progressive discipline, labor relations, Peace Officer Bill of Rights Act (POBAR) investigations, and whistleblowing retaliation. Britt is well recognized for her spirited and humor-laced employment law seminars in which she assists clients in complying with the ever-changing California legal developments and requirements. Most recently, Britt worked with Marty at LaPointe Law P.C., where she represented the firm’s California, Ninth Circuit and west coast clients and earned a reputation for her mastery of all things California law and terrible puns and ”Dad jokes”
Britt has a strong attraction to “David and Goliath” challenges, unprecedented legal issues and cheese-forward charcuterie boards. Britt has contributed to pivotal and landmark cases both through her private practice and strategic collaborations with nationally recognized trial attorneys, including in plaintiff-side class action lawsuits. Rounding out her experience, Britt performed exhaustive legal research and analysis while employed with a public policy think-tank at UC Hastings College of the Law. Her analytical synthesis has been acknowledged in publications and authorities on family responsibilities discrimination in employment.
Britt has received many degrees from top-ranked universities--a B.A. with highest honors from the University of California at Davis, an M.A. from Santa Clara University, and a J.D. from #14 nationally ranked UCLA School of Law (Go Bruins!). Britt has also received numerous academic awards, distinctions, and merit scholarships for her outstanding performance, including the prestigious Masin Family Academic Excellence Award at UCLA Law for her mastery of Conflict of Laws.
Although highly competitive and calculating, Britt is a softy with her smiling and approachable demeanor. She truly cares about her clients. Britt is a mother to a toddler, whose goodness and authenticity inspire her to be the best every day. Britt has not had a good night’s sleep since 2021. She is an avid Golden State Warriors, San Francisco 49er, and SF Giants fan.
Marty and Britt collectively formed Harmssen LaPointe P.C. with a California dream, shared values and vision, and a love for baseball and sourdough.
